In November 2006, I emailed a friend and terrific artist, Karen Vesk, pictures of my cats. To my utter joy and amazement, she painted an aceo for me for Christmas featuring my granddaughter Eloise and my wonderful 20 year old cat, Leo.
It gave me the idea that I'd like to have the aceo artists I admire paint their interpretation of LEO.
(ACEO stands for "Art Cards, Editions and Originals". They are miniature works of art, 2.5 inches by 3.5 inches in size, the standard dimensions of a trading card or an average deck of playing cards. Found in all styles and all media, they are collected, traded and given as gifts. They fit in a standard trading card sleeve, stored in a regular sized photo album or collector card album, or can be matted and framed. They are an affordable way to own original art and get a feel for an artist's work up close. The ONLY requirement is the size: 2.5 inches by 3.5 inches.)
So I wrote a short note inviting them to get involved with "Project Leo". I told them that I had pictures loaded on my website and would send the info if they thought they'd be interested. It was important to me that they painted him in their own style, from my favorite pic of him or however they saw him. I asked what the charge would be for the commission and if they would be interested. All the fees quoted were very fair and reasonable.
ALL the artists wrote back very enthusiastic notes saying that they thought it would be a fun idea and gave me an idea of their fee. Unfortunately, as of this date 3 have had to bow out.
Several of the artists have asked it they could make prints of Leo and sell them on eBay, so if you're interested in buying one or just seeing other pieces by the artist, please click on the aceo. Artists retain the copyright to all artwork.
They have turned out SO much better than I could ever have hoped! The imagination and talent among this group is awesome.
(And Leo loves them too! He says he never looked better!)
